After being told absolutely no during the last 200 years, the House of Representatives now have okayed a new bill that could allow for a House of Representatives placement to be made for the inhabitants of the District of Columbia. This is a total jolt to some, who analyze the circumstance while stating that technically the District of Columbia isn’t a state and it has no right to any representative within the House.

Along with incorporating a member of the House for the D.C. area, Utah has actually been provided a fourth seat. At present the bill is handed to the Senate to get a final authorization however with the District of Columbia not really being a real state, most are expecting the bill to become squashed. Several may not have noticed yet two centuries previously it had been established that the District of Columbia will be forbidden a seat in the House as it was not really a state.

Just falling short of the number of needed citizens, Utah will more than likely fill in the lack following the subsequent election to get another seat within the actual House.

Since 1960, 435 seats have already been filled in the House of Representatives. Although this is a major landmark, the point that the District of Columbia is not a state will cause snafu in the majority House. Although it is really a landmark in the House of Representatives, opponents have plainly expressed that associates of the House are usually picked by the folks of the states.

The House of Representatives currently have arranged 437 seats even after 2010 where Utah was slated to be expanded in to a fourth district. Even though it’s a first time for the actual District of Utah to become approved within the House it was not its very first time to end up being reviewed. In the year 1978, the District of Columbia had been denied since it run short on the three-fourth majority regarding the actual states.

The District of Columbia yet again attempted this particular situation in 1993. That endeavor was targeted at making the District of Columbia into a full-pledged state of the United States Of America. Again this proposition was rejected. For the time being the bill approval for a seat of District of Columbia will have to be determined yet through the Senate.

The defense regarding the District of Columbia states how the District should be granted a seat due to the fact that its residents spend taxes and also face conflicts of the country just like various other states. And so, the debate continues on. The final verdict will be interesting to anticipate.

World leaders doing the rounds in their own nations often look more than a little bemused. But Nicolas Sarkozy got in trouble recently for being apparently unable to recognise what country he was in. Standing in the easternmost province of France, Alsace, Sarkozy mis-spoke and claimed he was in Germany whilst denouncing German economic competition. Let’s be hoping your French property insurance has a clause for cleaning egg off the walls, Nicolas.

President Sarkozy has never enjoyed a particularly strong relationship with his rural voters, and this latest pratfall happened while he was attempting to gain some support from them. It is apparent that Sarkozy probably didn’t mean that he believed that Alsace was a German region, as the phrasing of the remark was clearly a slip of the tongue. Sarkozy was talking about protecting French farmers’ interests remarking ‘I’m not saying that simply because I’m in Germany’. But the geographical issue is something of a sore wound historically. The various occupations and reclamations of Alsace by both side didn’t quite have the character of two world powers calmly negotiating holiday let insurance. Prior to the 17th Century, Alsace had been a part of the Holy Roman Empire, one of Germany’s many precursors. The french annexed it, but lost it in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Alsace was returned to France after the Great War, but was annexed during Nazi occupation in the Second World War (and claimed back at the conclusion).

Today, Alsace is obviously a stable region with a beautiful rural character. Because of its outstanding natural beauty, tourists and immigrants flock there to take out holiday cottage insurance. However, the annexation of Alsace is still within living memory, and the force proscription of Alsatians has long been a point of racial issue. Despite a history of war and occupation, ties to both nations are evident a celebrated: many of the towns have German names, and Alsatians would be horrified to be disowned by France. Perhaps, however, the greatest offence here is not that by calling the Alsatians ‘German’, it makes them ‘not French’: it makes them ‘not Alsatian’.

The Grand Hotel is the best known of all Brighton hotels, not solely due to its Victorian grandeur and seafront location, but for the role it had to play in one of the most infamous moments in British politics, the 1984 Brighton bombing. On the 12th October, a bomb planted by IRA operative Patrick Magee ripped through the hotel, paralysing and killing numerous people.

This shocking act of terrorism had one principal goal – the assassination of then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, who was staying in the hotel for the duration of the Conservative Party conference. The Grand Hotel bombing, and its fallout, continues to haunt British politics to this day, as this guide explores.

The Brighton Bombing: In Detail

The bomber, Patrick Magee, had checked into the hotel a few weeks before the planned party conference, commonly held in October. Magee used a false alias to book his stay, Roy Walsh, and used the time to plant a bomb under the bath in his room, number 629, timing it to go off in the middle of the night for maximum effect when most Conservative MPs would be asleep.

As she planned for conference, on the night of the blast Margaret Thatcher had retired to her room for the evening to make final preparations on her keynote speech. Thatcher was famous in political circles for needing only the minimum sleep, so was still wide awake to hear the full impact of the bomb. If Magee’s intention had been to murder the premier, his plan backfired, as the bomb destroyed her bathroom but left her bedroom unscathed. Police quickly escorted Thatcher from the premises and to the relative safety of the local police station as they continued their investigation into the bomb.

Tragically, the bomb claimed several lives, including Tory MP Sir Anthony Berry and Rebekah Wakeham, the wife of another influential party member, Treasury Secretary Sir John Wakeham. In total, the bomb claimed five lives, although the IRA’s principal objective to kill a leading Cabinet figure did not succeed. The bomb paralysed a number of individuals unfortunate enough to be guests of the Grand Hotel that night, including the wife of Tory grandee Norman Tebbit.

In the hours after the Grand Hotel bomb, the IRA were quick to claim responsibility, justifying the act of terrorism by restating their opposition to the occupation of British forces in the Republic of Ireland. In a statement, the IRA would make a vow, reminding the British government that they would only have to be ‘lucky once’ to claim a significant political scalp.

Despite being shaken by the attack, the Prime Minister responded to the IRA’s intimidation by vowing the government would not change its path as a result of terrorism in a speech that would win admiration from ever her most ardent critics in the Labour Party and elsewhere. Over two years later, Magee, 33 at the time of the bombing, was found guilty of the crime, and was served with eight life sentences. However, following the Good Friday Agreement in 1999, Magee was released early from prison, a decision that angered various figures from across the political spectrum in both the media and Houses of Parliament.

To win and be announced as the President of the United States of America, the candidates have to use morality and religion, rouse the people’s interest in their faith and issues same as civil unions or even gay marriages, and say that they are proponents of your faith. It was different back in the day, when the fight was between the candidates themselves, their platforms as well as agendas, what their visions for the country were, political alliances versus the other’s, one state versus another, but today, it’s more about religion and morality than anything else.

Over the centuries, most of the wars have been dependent on religion, something everybody realize to be true. Iraq is separated into a power struggle of three spiritual groups; similar in the former Yugoslavia; the annihilation of the Jewish people in Germany; African genocide, and let’s remember the last 800 years in England and Ireland, to name but a few. The same thing is starting to happen in America. We are so divided between our ideals and beliefs – but religion is winning! Separation of church and state is being argued ever more often. Soon, if you are not like everybody else, religion’s minorities will be faced with fear and uncertainty as history has proved over time. Proselytization will become widespread, with people switching in order to be in the majority. Missionaries would be like door to door sales(wo)men spreading their word that they are the real defenders of ‘the American Way.

The Constitution, particularly the First Amendment, is just words on paper. What makes those words their power are the actions of the people of its country. With America and its people divided as it is today, how will it still hold true? Will it slowly turn into an uneven as well as right wing rule? Nobody is certain but many fear that this might really become a reality in the 21st century, particularly in the light of the issue surrounding the previous presidential election.

In the presidential election of 2004, 82% of the voters said that their major concern was moral (religious) beliefs. That was more than the economy, education, the environment, terrorism, energy, and the war in Iraq. It was the number one concern in America; the basis of most people’s decision on who gets their vote. Does that make any sense when our country is filled with a lot of more pressing ills right now? But, in reference to it, and give it its due plan, one must ask: Whatever happened to ‘live and let live?’ Whatever happened to tolerance? Whatever happened to ‘love thy brother?’ What has happened to America, the land of the free to live our lives as free, consenting adults and pursue our forefathers’ foresighted decree of ‘separation of church and state?’

Question: Why do we swear on the Bible when we are in court despite the fact that the Ten Commandments are not worthy to be put on display in federal buildings? What happens next? Time and our President’s decisions will tell.

Senator Joseph Biden lately announced his presidential bid and beginning of his 2007 campaign; a bid that would certainly be most accepted by the domestic violence lobbyists. A sponsor of the VAWA or Violence against Women Act, Sen. Biden has backed up the eradication of domestic violence and in the process, obtained alliance with influential feminist movements and special interest groups. Supporting this feminist cause would be obviously beneficial for a senator, particularly for Democrats in the Senate. However, is he willing to risk all the benefits he’s reaping from his alliances to own up to the reality that this federal law has its weak points and loopholes.

Domestic violence has become a commercial industry, resulting in dominant groups with strong controlling powers in local communities everywhere. Due to our belief that domestic violence reaches a rampant stage, we have inadvertently authorized the emergence of a powerful group that has our courts playing in the palm of their hands.

Each day, some becomes a target of this fake domestic violence, usually a very competent mother or father being given a restraining order in some family court somewhere in this country. The complainants don’t even need to provide one piece of evidence to support their complain yet the respondent has to go through an extremely embarrassing procedure that even murderers and other criminals are not put through because they’re covered by the 6th Amendment.

A person responding to a temporary restraining order or TRO needs to undergo a long, degrading, and costly process. Their kids will be taken away from them, go into depression, and might show signs of post traumatic stress disorder as a result of the experience. Those who were wrongly accused become traumatized because they were never served justice and vindicated.

Between men and women, the men are much more likely to be victimized by fake claims and restraining orders though the number of women similarly accused is rising as well. To illustrate, in a recent court case in San Francisco, a women received a TRO after falling down the stairs, pushed by her own husband. The man was cunning and obviously knew exactly how to get around the law as he stated that he became afraid of her and also that she looked unstable emotionally, reason behind his filing a TRO on his own wife.

It isn’t simple, this family violence issue. There must be various approaches to fix problems as families do not fit in most formulas and conventions. Claims of domestic violence must be verified first and if found legitimate, only then should the strong penalties be meted out to the violators. Studies reveal that at least half of all the cases on domestic violence do not fit into the criteria of VAWA and these must be given more scrutiny as well as evaluation before making a decision that could change the lives of lots of people and break up families forever. Additionally, people who make bogus accusations and the lawyers who help them must be held responsible and be given extreme penalties as well.

U.S. Congress should allow the VAWA but they have to make provisions to ensure balance in the system, to ensure that everyone gets a fair trial. We can’t fail to see that this legislation, if mishandled, could lead to wreckage of family units and a lot of lives in its aftermath, Senator Biden.

Mikhail Gorbachev (1931- ) was not the first to introduce Perestroika – the economic liberalization of the communist system along capitalistic lines.

In the course of the Russian civil war (1918-1922) the Bolsheviks implemented what they called “War Communism” (1917-1921), the militarization of the economy. Between 1916 and also 1920, industrial output plunged by more than four fifths. Grain harvests in both 1920 and 1921 disastrously dwindled, triggering widespread starvation, getting 5 million lives. A series of rebellions of sailors started, most famously in the Krohnstadt naval base.|In the years from 1918 to 1922, during the civil war in Russia, the Bolsheviks used a system known as “War Communism” wherein businesses and industries were nationalized from 1917 to 1921. The policy had a negative effect in the economy and during 1916 to 1920, the industrial result dropped drastically. Grain production in 1920 to 1921 severely decreased which resulted in wide famine and claimed countless lives. Rebellions and protests started; several sailors headed one of the most famous uprisings in the naval base of Krohnstadt.|It was in the course of Russia’s Civil War that the Bolsheviks launched what was called “War Communism”; it was an economic policy expropriating all businesses, used in 1917 until 1921. This plan led to the dramatic drop of the economy. The production and also harvesting of vegetation from 1920 to 1921 were adversely affected and its resulting scarcity resulted in country wide famine and the death toll reached to 5 million. Riots and protests were all over the place; with the Krohnstadt rebellion being one of numerous uprisings led by Soviet sailors.

In an attempt to earn control once again, Vladimir Lenin (1870-1924) introduced the NEP or New Economic Policy. Trade was allowed once again and agricultural and industrial production encouraged. Farmers and other peasants were still needed to turn over a portion of their produce to the government but any surplus will be theirs to keep or even to profit from.

Farmers were also permitted to rent their land and also hire their own workers, quite contrary to communist ideals. Small to medium enterprises were permitted private ownership while the government still maintained control over big businesses, foreign trade, transportation, finance, and heavy industries or those that were called “commanding heights” during that period.

In 1921-2, Lenin re-introduced money to re-monetize the economy that’s consisted of barter, quotas, and centrally issued economic directives. Within lower than seven years, production in many parts of the economy reverted to pre-revolutionary levels. Nor did the NEP die with Lenin. It carried on for 4 years after his death in 1924.

The NEP had its own share of flaws.

NEP was characterized by inflation and the necessity to cap the prices of non-agricultural goods. Peasants hid grain for speculation reasons. A black market in goods was developed by Nepmen – private traders. Communist party General Secretary Joseph Stalin (1879-1953), reinstated agricultural production quotas in 1929, collectivized all arable land, and also criminalized private trading in 1930. In 1928, he promulgated the first Five-Year Plan (1928-1932) and also central planning substituted market mechanisms. The NEP was useless.

More significant than proving perfection on your parties side, is a eagerness to seek out the flaws and correct them; to enhance; to keep track of your integrity. In the face of the opposition bashing away and looking for any indication of weakness it’s tempting to deny any fault at all, but it’s still poor to ignore possible development. For a leader to encourage confidence, he must maintain a balance between claimed effectiveness and a willingness to examine and adjust when changes can make a real impact; Not because the opposition is demanding apologies for not adhering to their opinions, when their only cause is your destruction, and only when reason makes a powerful case.

There are those so hungry for a disaster to blame on a president, nothing would stop their finding fault with the opposition while their party’s mistakes are given a pass.

I have been reading David McCullough’s 1776. George Washington, in public, was a leader who inspired confidence and optimism while in private, as read in his letters and personal conversations, he was really concerned for the success of the Patriot Army. Throughout New York City’s defense, Washington committed some errors in judgment such as selecting the wrong person to lead a post, dividing his army when the opposition was stronger and changing halfway through. All the changes lead to confusion among the soldiers entering the battle. He also failed to notice the Long Island path that the British army utilized to surround the American troops.

Fortunately for George Washington, there was no press conference expecting him after that defeat nor was he barraged with demands from the opposition to confess that he failed. At the time, he did exactly what he thought was best and Washington learned from his faults that led to their eventual success, defeating then superpower Britain. He might have made errors along the way but he was the most qualified to do the task. Even after leading his army to success, he humbly admitted to congress that he felt unqualified for the job. George Washington admittedly made some bad decisions but history wouldn’t be as it is if he was dismissed after making these kinds of bad decisions. Congress knew about his problems but they believed that he had the capability to push through and they chose to keep a united front and set aside their own political aspirations.

Nowadays, politicians will stop at nothing to put down their opponents, applying unverified facts and disregarding the possible harm it could do to the country. The media help them alongside by their exaggerations, setting back the country’s advancement. More people are now seeing the deceptions of these unthinking politicians. We can tell who are those working for the good of the people and those who are only making shallow noise, being self serving and indulging to other politicians’ egos. If only they realize how they’ve lost their dignity and credibility to the insightful and perceptive public.

As we move into 2011, Republicans have promised to confront the wasteful spending policies of Democrats by dramatically slashing government spending. Many of the financial cuts that are being talked about will come from critical domestic initiatives which were created to help the jobless and senior citizens. Despite the fact that most will acknowledge that reducing spending is essential, other concerns are much more critical to tackle in order to stabilize the American economic system.

What quite a few individuals don’t realize is that spending cuts are needed not just because of short term stimulus spending programs, but due to the fact tax revenue is much lower for every level of government. Tax revenue has been significantly reduced because individuals are buying considerably less not out of personal choice but out of necessity.

We are witnessing the greatest global exchange of financial power ever viewed. This exchange of economic prosperity is related to job losses in numerous countries which are too politically hardened to address the more flexible dynamic leadership in countries like China. As leaders in numerous Democracies all over the world bicker about dealing with their fiscal troubles, communist countries like China have the ability to quickly adjust and situate themselves for additional growth.

As seen in the end of 2010, Democrats and Republicans are able to work together to do the work of the people. But such laws are child’s play compared to the real solutions they must address in order to get American citizens back to work. No longer can these politicians disregard the advantages of gainful employment, the employer backed health insurance coverage which most employers offer and the means for parents to care for their children.

Many have questioned the wisdom of supplying Most Favored Nation trade status to places like China. After all, China is a communist country, has a lousy human rights record and repeatedly exports goods which contain dangerous levels of toxins. Aside from dangerous merchandise, China is also the recipient of many of the job losses in Democracies around the world. Some individuals believe, and for good reason, China’s Most Favored Nation trade standing really should have been terminated a long time ago.

Difficult solutions for addressing decreasing tax revenue, and bloated government budgets, will require far more then budget cuts to fix. Politicians from around the world must face reality with the fact that domestic businesses are unable to compete against workers which make seventy cents and hour or even less in China. To compete in a global economic system, leaders must understand that all countries must have a manufacturing base so that their countrymen actually produce something which can be traded throughout the world.

We live in an increasingly industrially reliant culture. Fast food, disposable goods, and cheap gasoline is what this culture relies on. This culture is fast eating itself up. That’s why we should turn to permaculture.

Another way to look at the world and its resources is permaculture. What we’ll look at is the history of this conservation movement, meet its originators, and determine the future of permaculture. There are basic tenants of this growing movement which you may already be applying.

Permaculture, as you may have guessed, is a contraction of the words permanent culture. Relying on sustainable agriculture instead of being dependent on fossil fuels is what this idea is about.

It will use local resources, smaller more diverse crop planning, non-chemically dependant fertilizing, for example. Permaculture is a movement away from anything big and industrial to the smaller and sustainable farms, encouraging more interdependence with community members.

A wildlife biologist named Bill Mollison of Australia began this in the ’70s. The industrial revolution and its impact on our culture is what he saw.

How this kind of culture was bound to eventually cave in due to its monstrous appetite. He decided to take on a more positive approach instead of reacting in a negative way.

By studying nature, he came to several conclusions about how nature goes through sustainable cycles without the benefit of man. He then began to teach this philosophy.

Masanobu Fukuoka is another man who built up a following in this movement. When it comes to the soil, he believes you should disturb it to an absolute minimum. Seeds are planted right on the soil’s surface and then lightly covered with straw or other light mulch.

Before the flower stage, weeds are trimmed and allowed to be a part of the mulch. Unwanted vegetation is killed without using poison, giving favorable soil where you can plant. In time the soil becomes healthy and weeds and pests become less of a concern.

Another voice in this community is Ruth Stout. Her ideas about “no-till” gardening have caused many to change their views about weeds and weeding. She purported to never weed but allowed plants to grow together just as Fukuoka did.

Good and bad vegetation build the soil, leading to healthy crops and less pests. Becoming as simple as flicking out the weed is weeding once the soil is built. Chemicals and pesticides are not needed.

Permaculture would have to be embraced to a greater and lesser degree and this is apparent from it’s small and revolutionary beginnings. Pollution due to industrial waste and mass transportation systems are on their way down memory lane. It will cost too much to ship in food from across the country so it makes more and more sense to buy food grown locally or grow it yourself.

Permaculture as a basic philosophy has grown and spread its less intrusive approach to living on and using the earth. Though it seems to be associated with second and third generation hippies, it’s practiced by Urbanites by growing a vegetable garden and tossing trimmings back on the beds. Regardless of its varied philosophies, permaculture will impact our lives for the good.

When my mind turns to the copier and all the things I hate about it (which, oddly enough, is my job), I am struck by its power as an image of monotony, stagnancy and pointlessness. I have to wonder, could the colour photocopier even function as a symbol of evil and cynicism on a larger scale? Are not close to the most severe things in our earth tainted by the taste of the kind of bureaucratic, cauterize emotionlessness that the photocopier evokes.

Think the next case study: talks between the Palestinian and the Israelis have been reopened. We can only assume this is some kind of metaphor, or a simile, or some kind of peculiar idiom. This is because its literal meaning is somewhat obscure. Commonly, we apply the word “talks” to refer to diplomatic dissertate, only as regards the Israelis and Palestinians, “speak” appears to refer merely to the act of talking. “Talks” is merely the pluralisation of this word. The issue has once again started to generate noise in secluded conference rooms, but no more than this.

The reason for my pessimism on this matter is that I believe that I have noticed a fundamental flaw in this “peace process”. I’m going to call this flaw photocopier diplomacy. Allow me to explain: negotiations between the belligerents have been been reopened after two years of silence. Why have they been reopened now? What makes this the optimal time for restarting this process? The truth is, since the last time talks failed miserably, there has been no significant change in the material facts that form the bedrock of this conflict. Thus, the basis for the talks has not altered in the slightest. Neither the demands at the table nor the incentives to yield to those demands have changed for either party. It is as if the preamble for the previous talks has literally been fed through a Xerox. Why should we now expect different results?

Maybe we could, if some alteration in the political landscape had allowed for the possibility of reinterpreting the material conditions of the conflict in such a way as to offer a new way advancing towards settlement. The Palestinian leadership has long since lost any kind of dynamism. The Obama administration has failed to make progress along with Bush when it comes to the conflict in the Middle East. The bark may have changed, but there is still no bite to this beast. American aid to Israel will not cease, American humanitarian support of Gaza will not increase substantially, both belligerents will continue to act without fear of direct American intervention.

And so the office equipment keep rolling, humming, buzzing, churning out foregone conclusions and tired arguments. This is the the world we live in. Only by changing polarized positions can we hope to move forward or we churn out the same mistakes of the past, like a some over used copier.
